This Ed-reform Trend Is Supposed To Motivate Students; Instead, It Shames Them (Launa Hall)

This essay by Launa Hall made me sad. While I do think that most of the 21st century skills are much older, I do hope some of the older approaches in education would have been gone by now.
When I was a kid it was a common ritual that the head teacher would come to class every month to read the results out loud, not in alphabetical order, but from good to bad. You always hoped to be in the first half of the list.
It were always the same kids who were mentioned as last. Being shamed didn’t help them then, this will not help them now.

  1. Public announcements are alive and well. I have grandson with a disability who is in a regular class. Time for soccer try-outs (for a school team, not international competition). He tried out. The person in charge came into his class and asked all those who had tried out to stand up. The names of the “successful” applicants were read out. My grandson was the ONLY one not selected. Needless to say he was very distressed. His mum realistically decided since he is going to have a lot of these experiences, she should build resiliency rather than confronting the school. Not sure if she was rught.
