Funny on Sunday: how to give an absent student that Friday the 13th feeling

It happened last Friday. It was the first lesson of a new topic I’m teaching and I did a roll call, just to check if the students were in the correct classroom. After some names, I read one name of a person who was seemingly absent. One student replied he just got a message from the boy asking if his presence was obligatory.

I asked if I could answer him. The student handed me his phone, so I typed that being present is a good option in my classes, and added a selfie with a big grin.

The class laughed for a couple of minutes and the student who gave me his phone said afterwards that the absent student had sent him another message as reply. It’s difficult to translate, but it represented that Friday the 13th feeling…
