When Does the Flipped Classroom Work in Higher Education?

One of the most widely discussed educational innovations of the past fifteen years is undoubtedly the flipped classroom, helped in no small part by the attention generated by Khan Academy. Students engage with theoretical content before class, often through videos or other preparatory materials. Classroom time is then devoted to questions, applications, practice, and collaboration. In reality, the underlying idea is much older. Teachers have been asking students to read a text before class for generations. The promise, particularly in higher education, is appealing: fewer passive lectures and more active learning.

But what about learning outcomes?

A new second-order meta-analysis by Uzun and colleagues, synthesising 25 previous meta-analyses, offers a nuanced answer. The short version is: yes, it generally works. But probably not for the reason many people assume.

The overall effect is positive

Across all included studies, the researchers found an average effect size of around 0.75 standard deviations. That is more than respectable.

But hold your horses.

There is an important caveat behind that number.

Once the authors corrected for publication bias, the tendency for studies with positive findings to be published more often than those with null or negative results, the estimated effect dropped to around 0.59. Still clearly positive, but less spectacular than the literature initially suggested.

That is not a criticism of flipped classrooms. Rather, it is another reminder that educational innovations rarely turn out to be quite as powerful as the earliest enthusiastic studies suggest. We have seen this pattern repeatedly in meta-analyses.

It does not work equally well everywhere

And, as always, averages can hide substantial differences.

That is certainly true here. The effects varied considerably across disciplines. The largest benefits were found in programmes such as:

  • medicine
  • nursing
  • pharmacy
  • language education

In STEM subjects, however, the effects were considerably smaller.

If you think about it, that is not particularly surprising. In programmes where students spend class time practising clinical skills, communication, or other professional competencies, replacing lectures with guided practice has an obvious advantage. In disciplines centred on abstract concepts and theoretical reasoning, the added value appears less pronounced.

Videos are not the active ingredient

Many discussions about flipped classrooms revolve around videos.

Which platform should you use?

How long should videos be?

Should students be required to watch them?

This study suggests those may not be the most important questions.

The meta-analysis indicates that learning gains do not primarily come from watching videos. They come from what happens during the classroom time that those videos make possible.

Positive effects emerged when the freed-up class time was used for:

  • case discussions
  • feedback
  • problem solving
  • guided practice
  • collaboration

In other words, videos are not the goal. At best, they create space for richer learning activities. That is probably where most of the educational benefit actually comes from.

Higher-order thinking is not automatic

A common claim is that flipped classrooms automatically promote deeper learning and higher-order thinking.

This second-order meta-analysis only partly supports that claim.

The strongest effects were found for professional skills, self-directed learning, and overall academic performance. Effects on higher-order thinking skills were noticeably smaller.

Simply flipping a lesson does not automatically improve the quality of learning tasks. Higher-order thinking does not emerge because students watched a video before class. It develops when students are challenged during and after class to analyse, make connections, and solve meaningful problems.

The biggest pitfall: more work without more learning

The study also highlights an important risk.

In practice, a flipped classroom sometimes becomes little more than:

  • adding videos on top of regular lectures
  • requiring extra preparation without changing what happens in class
  • shifting more responsibility onto students

In those situations, students (and often instructors) simply end up doing more work while classroom teaching changes very little. That is not really a flipped classroom. It is simply extra homework, which students may or may not complete.

This probably explains why some studies report little or no benefit, and occasionally even negative experiences.

So, when does the flipped classroom work?

If you are tired of nuance by now, here is the simplest summary.

Flipped classrooms seem to work best when:

  • the preparatory materials are of high quality;
  • students actually come to class prepared;
  • the freed-up class time is used actively;
  • instructors provide substantial guidance during that time;
  • the learning goals require application, feedback, and practice.

In other words, the success of the flipped classroom does not lie in reversing the order of teaching. It lies in making better use of the valuable time that teachers and students spend together.

Seen that way, the flipped classroom is not a miracle solution. It is simply one way of putting a much older pedagogical principle into practice: use the precious time when teachers and students are together for the things that can only be done together.
